Vinga DFR
Super Fast Reindex Utility for Dataflex
Vinga DFR is an exceedingly fast reindexing routine for DataFlex databases, developed
to reduce the time spent on reindexing as much as possible. The index files are created in
a fraction of the time taken by DFINDEX, and are 100% binary compatible with the index
files produced by DataFlex DFINDEX. The use of Vinga DFR is easy and straightforward,
still offering several powerful enhancements over the DataFlex DFINDEX as well as other
third party products.
Any IBM PC (or compatible) computer with IBM PC DOS version 3.1 (or
compatible) or later can be used to run Vinga DFR, and it can be used in DataFlex single
or multi user environments.
When all the powerful features in Vinga DFR is used, the performance gain over DFINDEX
is outstanding. Even when Vinga DFR is run in basic mode (not using features like extended
memory and the MWR, Multiple Workstation Reindex) it is considerably faster than
DFINDEX,
especially on data files with many records. When adding the extended memory support as
well as the Multiple Workstation Reindex feature, Vinga DFR gets even faster.
The Multiple Workstation Reindex (MWR) feature is used in network environments to speed
up the reindex process to the limits of the technical environment. By using
several workstations on the network, the work of the reindex process is automatically
shared between them. By using the MWR feature, the full capacity of the network is used
during the reindex session.
Vinga DFR offers true unattended operation. All errors and warnings are stored in log
files. Once the reindex session is started it will continue until all work is done. If any
errors occur during the reindex session, they will be logged in a log file. Additional
information is also logged, such as the time required for each index.
On Novell NetWare networks Vinga DFR automatically ensures that network broadcasts will
not halt the reindex operations. Instead, these messages are logged in the log file.
During the reindex session Vinga DFR checks for bad and duplicate records. It also
creates a BAD file for use with the DataFlex Cleanup utility.
Vinga DFR will take advantage of extended memory when such memory is available.
Extended memory may be available on PC:s with a 80286 processor or higher. The extended
memory is often displayed when the computer is switched on. Using extended memory will
speed up the reindex session significantly.
With Vinga DFR it is also possible to specify where to store temporary files. By
putting temporary files on local hard disks, less information has to be transferred
through the network, resulting in less network load and increased performance.
During the reindex process Vinga DFR continuously recalculates and displays the
estimated percentage and time left of the reindex session.
DataFlex versions prior to v3.01 includes the Cleanup utility. Vinga DFR includes an
enhanced Cleanup utility. The enhanced Cleanup uses Vinga DFR instead of DFINDEX. Also, it
eliminates the need to restart the reindex program when all duplicate records are deleted.
With the enhanced Cleanup you will save one reindex session when there are duplicate
records in the data file.
Vinga DFR is a part of our complete set of maintenance utilities for DataFlex. The
utilities have been promoted in Europe, Australia, Canada and in the USA.
